초록/요약

Study of Lee Man-gyu's thoughts about education and the racial movement Lee Hak-jun History education Graduate school of education Hankuk University of Foreign Studies While teaching students in Song-do Middle School, Lee Man-gyu educated them to inspire national consciousness. His strenuous effort in education was for independence like other intellectuals of the period wished. Lee Man-gyu had a unique career during the period of Japanese colonial rule and before and after liberation. At first, his racial movement covered a wide range of areas from interchange with the right-wing organization represented by Club 'Heung-up' to left-wing activities coming along with Yeo Woon-hyeong. In addition, as we consider 『朝?敎育史』, Lee Man-gyu accepted a broad range of achievements of various ideologies and philosophies of those days including nationalism, Marxism, and positivism. His extensive realm of activities and his ideological basis resulted in devotion to the racial movement and led him to have a variety of roles in the campaign as well as being imprisoned four times. He also left the great achievement in organizing education history of Korea during the time in which he lived. The case of Club 'Heung-up' in relation to his racial movement suggests something considerable. It endowed the bourgeois nationalists, who gave up or suspended the campaign, extensive opportunity to be converted. However, nationalists like Lee Man-gyu kept on struggling against Japanese imperialism to gain independence and establish a new government. In particular, in pursuing his vision for education, he constantly developed the campaign for independence and national education not buried in the ideology of the right or left. The value of Lee Man-gyu concerning his education-oriented thoughts and involvement in the independence movement should be based on making clear what his ultimate aim was rather than being based upon his ideology. Lee Man-gyu felt that construction of a new country was neededafter the national liberation. For that, he insisted the national consciousness should be reinforced through education. He thought building up a new nation and leading social changes were possible through education. In terms of his educational activities,he especially emphasized the role of women and education for them, which is remarkable considering that the educational circumstance was disadvantageous to them in that period. Also, he participated in politics and tried to prepare for a new national education system through the reorganization of the school system. Although the new national structure he thought of didn't transpire concretely, according to 『朝鮮敎育史』, we can guess what he expected from a new government. It was making a country guaranteeing political liberty and economic equality.
